After an objective review by the US Department of Health and Human Services, the Sexual Risk Avoidance abstinence curriculum, Heritage Keepers, has been approved and found effective in delaying sexual initiation among youth. The curriculum is offered by Heritage Community Services located in Charleston, SC.

The rigorous program design involved 2,215 youth in 7-9th grades. Findings showed that those receiving the Heritage Keepers curriculum were significantly less likely to initiate sex than a comparison group at the 12 months follow-up.  The study reports,  “Sexual experience increased from 29.1% to 33.7% for the program participants, and from 29.2% to 43.2% among the comparison group.”

Information about Heritage Keepers Abstinence Education:

  • It is the only A-H consistent abstinence-until-marriage program recognized by the US HHS Office of Adolescent Health (OAH) on their list of the 31 proven-effective evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs.
  • It has been reviewed by US Office of Population Affairs, Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and approved for medical accuracy.
  • Additionally, in September 2013, the Medical Institute for Sexual Health also reviewed and approved the curriculum for medical accuracy.
  • In September 2013, the National Abstinence Education Association reviewed and approved the curriculum for meeting the federal Title V, Section 510 A-H requirements for abstinence education.
  • The curriculum has been reviewed and approved for being inclusive and non-stigmatizing towards LGBTQ youth.
  • The curriculum has been reviewed and approved for compliance with federal regulations prohibiting support of programs that promote religion or abortion.
  • The curriculum is compliant with the SC Comprehensive Health Education Act and compliant with SC Health Standards

Extensive behavioral studies indicate that a year after Heritage Keepers®, program students initiated sex at a rate 67% lower than well-matched non-program students. This particular study was of 2,215 students in 41 SC schools, and the population of the study was 63% African American. Strong program outcomes have been found across age, gender and race in rural, urban and suburban settings.

“It is important to understand what works in empowering youth to eliminate the risks of teen sexual activity. The National Abstinence Education Association (NAEA) is committed to promoting research that can inform this goal. We congratulate Heritage Community Services on their success in impacting the lives and sexual health of youth, “ stated Valerie Huber, Executive Director of  NAEA.

HB2 & SB1…”My Sex Organs”…

By Christine Kalmbach

Some may have heard about Katie Heim, an Austinite, who read her testimony -a poem to the Texas State legislators.  The poem, a slant on the gun issue in which she compares her vagina to a gun.

“If my vagina was a gun, you would stand for its rights,
You would ride on buses and fight all the fights.
If my vagina was a gun, you would treat it with care,
You wouldn’t spill all its secrets because, well, why go there.
If my vaginas was a gun, you’d say what it holds is private
From cold dead hands we could pry, you surely would riot.
If my vagina was a gun, its rights would all be protected,
no matter the body count or the children affected.
If my vagina was a gun, I could bypass security,
concealed carry laws would ensure I’d have impunity.
If my vagina was a gun, I wouldn’t have to beg you,
I could hunt this great land and do all the things men do.
But my vagina is not a gun, it is a mightier thing,
With a voice that rings true making lawmakers’ ears ring.
Vaginas are not delicate, they are muscular and magic,
So stop messing with mine, with legislation that’s tragic.
My vagina’s here to demand from the source,
Listen to the voices of thousands or feel their full force.”

So, I thought, I would write a poem based on the consequences of premarital sex and abortion and the choice of choosing life!

“My Sex Organs” by Christine Kalmbach

If “my sex organs” were the most important thing,
what a delusion in my mind that would bring!
If “my sex organs” were the only thing that mattered,
how sad that my body and life would be so shattered!
If “my sex organs” were only for my pleasure,
then whatever my love wants, I would never treasure!
If “my sex organs” were only used for my desires,
then I could use others, hurt them and be a liar!
If “my sex organs” were to be used by others,
there’s no love, no joy, only abuse that smothers.
If “my sex organs” have a right over others to kill,
then life is snuffed out ‘cause I just took a pill!
If “my sex organs” were used whenever and wherever outside of marriage,
premarital sex gives lies, broken hearts and the hurt is a huge miscarriage!
If “my sex organs” held a secret, even at first, from me,
what if I aborted my daughter, who could have helped heal me?
If “my sex organs” were only MY right,
then I could murder and exterminate a life without any fight!

If “my sex organs” were seen as holy and sacred,
women and girls wouldn’t spew lies and hatred.
If “my sex organs” weren’t used by movies and TV,
then people wouldn’t be acting out in promiscuity!
If “my sex organs” were for the honor of Christ,
I would live a life of no regrets, for He paid the ultimate price!
If “my sex organs” were given respect and honor,
then my man would always love me and never be a goner.
If “my sex organs” were saved and protected for love,
there would be no disease and no need for a glove!
If “my sex organs” were meant to create life,
then one day I could have a husband, be a mom and a wife!
If “my sex organs” were to give me and my husband pleasure,
the total joy and bonding I could never fully measure!
If “my sex organs” were to one day to create a family,
then baby on the way would make us 3!
If “my sex organs” were uniquely created just for me,
I would be a treasured and precious gift of Thee!

We hear that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare”, however, in reality pro-death supporters want abortion on demand, “anytime, any place and paid by you-the American taxpayer”.   Planned Parenthood has paid supporters to come in and protest at the State Capitol. Texas HB2 and SB1 will ensure that abortion clinics are held to the highest standards, doctors will be trained and accountable and that no infant over 20 weeks can be killed or exterminated like a roach.  The pro-death supporters are all about women’s rights but they don’t recognize the right to life for everyone.  When did women become so out of touch with their maternal instinct and the desire to protect that life growing inside of them?  Are exceptions made for rape, incest and abnormalities? Yes, but again isn’t life about living and haven’t doctors been wrong in some diagnoses? Why punish a child for something they are completely innocent of?  Every person alive today, had at the very least a pro-life mom!

We strongly encourage parents to educate their children about how God created life and how life is to be respected and honored (and how they are a gift), then abortion will no longer be needed or at the very least be truly “rare”! Please contact your Texas State Senator and let them know you support SB1. They will vote on it on Friday, 7/12/13! http://www.senate.state.tx.us/

Georgetown ISD: SIECUS and TFN’s Next Target?

Looks like Georgetown ISD is next –

4/10/2013 Wednesday Update in the Williamson County Sun posted –

“Major changes could be in store for Georgetown ISD’s sex education program, a member of a citizens committee tasked with reviewing the curriculum said this week. Former Mayor MaryEllen Kersch, who sits on the committee, said the increase in the number of sexually transmitted diseases in Georgetown from 2007 to 2011 shows that public schools are failing to properly educate teenagers about safe sex. The number of cases of Chlamydia and gonorrhea in the city’s two largest zip codes jumped during that period from 112 to 174, according to data provided to the citizens committee. Officials said that increase cannot be attributed to population growth alone.”

Georgetown ISD currently uses Scott & White’s Worth the Wait Curriculum in the Middle Schools.  The 6th graders receive the age appropriate version in their PE classes while 7th and 8th graders receive the instruction in Science.  All instruction is done by Georgetown ISD teachers and coaches.

The accusations that are being made against the current curriculum follows the pattern of many Districts in Texas as the Texas Freedom Network’s SHAC Initiative is being executed to ‘advocate change for sex ed’ in Texas.  The concerns also follow the SIECUS Community Action Toolkit recommendations.

Most likely discussions in the Georgetown ISD SHAC have resembled some or all of the following:

  • requirements of ‘evidence-based’ curriculum,
  • demands of discussions on comprehensive sex education,
  • declarations that the current curriculum is medically inaccurate and full of factual errors, and
  • accusations that the current curriculum and any abstinence based curriculum are fear and shame based.

The Texas Freedom Network is also working very diligently to make sure that SB 521 and HB 1057 do not pass.  These bills prohibit abortion providers or affiliates from providing instruction and materials in Texas schools.  A few of the curricula that are proposed as solutions MUST have relationships with abortion providers!

Carroll ISD’s Experiment with Big Decisions

Katherine Bennett, from Carroll ISD SHAC, testified AGAINST HB 1057 on Tuesday, 4/2/2103.  (Video: 10:16:38)  HB 1057 would ban abortion providers and their affiliates from sex education instruction or materials in Texas public schools.

She explained the Carroll ISD choice to use  Big Decisions for their Human Sexuality Curriculum.  After she testified, she was asked if the curriculum that they were using was affiliated with an abortion provider.  Her answer was ‘I have no idea’.  Why did she drive down from Southlake and wait over ten hours to testify against a bill that prohibits abortion providers and affiliates from schools?

Carroll ISD’s Health webpage has a Presentation that was given to the Parents and a Parent Letter.  On page 12 of the Parent Presentation, Abstinence, Oral, and Condom Use are listed as Contraception.

Big Decisions is the same curriculum for every age group.  The Texas Education Code requires the SHAC to recommend ‘appropriate grade levels and methods of instruction for human sexuality instruction.’
Big Decisions was written by Dr. Janet Realini and is available for free online.  Dr. Realini, the President of Healthy Futures Texas,  testified AGAINST Senate 521 and argued specifically against the Opt-In portion of the bill.
She registered to testify AGAINST House Bill 1057 but was not available when her name was called.  The committee did not hear testimony on this bill until after 11pm.  Representative Leach introduced the bill without the Opt-In.  It is unclear as to whether Dr. Realini left at that time or earlier.
Healthy Futures Texas is ‘dedicated to reducing teen pregnancy and unplanned pregnancy in San Antonio and Texas’ with very little mention of STD prevention.  The R U Ready cards posted on the Programs page list four clinics.  Two of them are Planned Parenthood centers, Las Palmas and Ashby.
